Pormpuraaw Art and Culture Centre C/O Pormpuraaw PO, QLD

Pormpuraaw Art & Cultural Centre Inc is a 100% First Nations owned not for profit organisation located in the remote community of Pormpuraaw on Cape York. Established in 2011, it is a gathering place that welcomes as community members and encourage the creation art and sculptures depicting traditional stories, remote living, and connection to the land. The Centre supports artists by showcasing and selling their works and acts as a community ‘Keeping Place’ for local artefacts that need to be kept preserved and available for future generations such as photographs, tools, art, and traditional dress.Pormpuraaw artists are strongly influenced by their connection to Country, their clans, their totems and stories passed down by Elders. The artists are renowned for their sculpture works using ghost nets and found objects. Other mediums utilised by the artist include printmaking, painting, carving and publications.

In addition to providing an inclusive space for Pormpuraaw locals to express their creativity, the art centre plays an important role in many other aspects of the community such as organising traditional dance shows and providing meals for the artist.
