Martha Nakamarra Poulson

Martha Poulson Nakamarra was born in Yuendumu, before moving to Warrabri (now Ali Curung). Martha started painting around 2003 at the Ali Curung Womens’ Centre, and was a founding member of Arlpwe Art and Culture Centre when it opened in 2008.
Martha depicts landscapes between Ali Curung and Yuendumu as well as bush foods, flowers and medicines. She paints in a remarkably eclectic range of styles, from almost completely abstracted to strictly figurative. In her age, Martha’s work has developed a looseness which often leans towards the psychedelic.

Martha is a committed painter, walking across town from her home every morning to be one of the earliest to the ladies’ painting studio. She is a proud Warlpiri lady and the matriarch of a big family.
