DWAYNE JESSELL

Dwayne Jessell (b. 1979) is a leading Gija artist whose practice is grounded in cultural authority, innovation and deep connection to Country. Raised by the late Jack Britten- Renowned Gija artist and co-founder of Warmun Art Centre, Dwayne was immersed from an early age in the artistic and cultural traditions of Gija heritage.

His work is anchored in the landscapes of Purnululu (Bungle Bungles), his father’s ancestral Country, and draws on Ngarranggarni (Dreaming) stories, cultural Law and spiritual knowledge passed down through generations. Known for his bold compositions and intuitive approach, Dwayne seamlessly blends traditional ochre techniques with contemporary expression, creating works of striking power and depth.

His practice explores themes of totems, animals, significant sites and identity through portraiture and landscape, moving between detailed and abstract forms. Fearless and bold, Dwayne is a master of ochre who works across all mediums, transforming any material into powerful works that resonate both culturally and internationally.

Dwayne has exhibited extensively across Western Australia and the Northern Territory and continues to gain strong national recognition. In 2024, he was selected as a finalist in the prestigious Lester Prize. In 2025, he was a finalist in the Collie Art Prize, Burnie Art Prize and Fremantle Print Prize, Finalist and 2nd place winner in the Harden Landscape Art Prize 2026, and has recently been selected as a finalist in the Lester Art Prize 2026. Dwayne continues to be featured in major exhibitions, with further presentations scheduled for 2026-2027.

Alongside his practice, Dwayne serves as a Director and Treasurer on the Warmun Art Centre Board of Directors and works as a Senior Studio Technician, supporting artists and safeguarding the legacy, Law and cultural knowledge of Gija people, while nurturing the next generation of artistic excellence.
