Ganomi Barsa was born on 2 October 1970 on Thursday Island. He completed his secondary education on the island, where he also trained in carpentry. In his twenties, Barsa developed a strong interest in creating traditional Torres Strait Islander art, particularly ceremonial headdresses and sardine cups, learning these cultural practices from close family members.
From a young age, he observed his father, grandfather, uncles, and brothers crafting traditional headpieces, with his brother having the greatest influence on his artistic development. Today, Barsa shares his knowledge and artworks through social media, aiming to inspire and educate younger generations about Torres Strait Islander culture and traditions. He has exhibited his work at art fairs, including CIAF in Cairns.
