Peter Gambung

Peter Gämbung is a senior cultural leader and artist from Ramingining, recognised for his enduring contributions to community life and cultural continuity. He reflects on his early years at the Millingimbi mission, where he trained as a boilermaker and later led the construction of the first barge transporting goods from Millingimbi Island to the mainland. Following the establishment of Ramingining, Gämbung played a key role in developing the community’s infrastructure, demonstrating leadership grounded in both practical skill and cultural authority.

Central to Gämbung’s practice is a deep commitment to the transmission of Yolngu knowledge. A respected knowledge holder within his clan, he is dedicated to ensuring that cultural law and stories are maintained and shared in the proper Yolngu way, with integrity and respect.

As a senior cultural officer at Bula’bula Arts, Gämbung is an important advocate for his community. He works closely with younger generations, combining his artistic practice with mentorship and active participation in programs that support the intergenerational transfer of cultural knowledge.

A Gupapuyngu man, Gämbung frequently depicts the ancestral narratives of the Burala (Diving Ducks), Balgabalga (Hammerhead Shark), and Dupun (Hollow Log), expressing these stories through his paintings as ongoing assertions of identity and cultural continuity.

Peter also supports his wife, Julie, an accomplished fibre artist, reflecting a shared commitment to cultural practice.
