Peter Gooloou Thomas

Peter Gooloou Thomas (b. 1975, Wyndham) is a Gija artist, cultural leader, army veteran and entrepreneur whose practice is deeply grounded in the knowledge systems of his people. Raised by respected elders and cultural leaders, he carries forward a profound legacy of healing, cultural Law and Dreamtime knowledge.

Immersed in Gija culture from a young age, Peter learned language, ceremony and survival on Country, performing his first Joonba at just five years old. His work draws on bush medicine, cave art, massacre histories, the Juwari spirit and two-way healing, creating powerful visual narratives that bridge ancestral knowledge with contemporary expression.

Since beginning his practice in 2024, Peter has rapidly gained national recognition, including nominations for the Archibald Prize and finalist positions in the Lester Prize, Fremantle Print Award (2025) and Napier Art Prize (Highly Commended, 2025). His work is distinguished by its depth, cultural authority and strong visual language.

Working primarily with ochre sourced from Gija Country, Peter’s practice also extends into innovative Gija artwear, bringing cultural stories into contemporary forms
