Sonia Mitchell

Papulankutja Artists

Sonia Mitchell is a Ngaanyatjarra woman and senior artist from Papulankutja (Blackstone), WA. Born in Warburton in 1969 to Jennifer Mitchell, Sonia has lived all her life in Blackstone. After completing primary school in her home community, she was sent to boarding school at Norseman Mission High School and later attended a girls high school at the Esperance Mission.

Sonia has been painting on and off at Papulankutja Artists since the art centres early days. Over the years, she has worked in various roles in the community, including as an arts worker and as a teachers aide at the Blackstone school. Her paintings are deeply connected to Country and culture, often drawing on her family’s strong ancestral knowledge.

Sonias favourite story to paint is Kungkarrangkalpa (The Seven Sisters), a significant Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) shared across many Aboriginal nations. Her work explores the strength and resilience of the sisters as they travel across the land, and the enduring connections between the stars, the land, and women’s knowledge.
